Why is Self-Care Important for Caregivers?

Caregivers are individuals who provide care to another person. In some cases, the person receiving care is an aging loved one, but caregivers can also provide care to children, younger adults, and those with disabilities.

Caregiving requires physical, mental, and emotional strength. Taking the time to provide self-care as a caregiver reduces the risk of burnout, a serious state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. Not only does a lack of self-care result in fatigue, but it also impacts the caregiver’s ability to care for another person. By prioritizing yourself and your needs as a caregiver, you ensure you can show up to provide the best quality care for the person you’re caring for.
