At Autumn Leaves of Northwest Austin, our family’s passion is to provide our residents with the same excellent memory care that we would want for our own family members. Our family owned and operated assisted living community is designed, from the ground up, specifically to meet the needs of those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. We carefully designed our building to allow safety and ease of movement, with wide hallways, abundant natural light, and bright, inviting décor that’s optimal for dementia care. Because we care exclusively for people with dementia, we design our assisted living communities differently. The hallways are wider, with varied cutouts to encourage the residents to continue down the corridor to their rooms. The lighting is brighter and more soothing to reduce the effects of “sundowning”–a phenomenon that occurs when the person with Alzheimer’s becomes anxious as the sun sets. The dining room comes with a large tropical fish tank based on studies that dementia residents have better appetites if they can watch fish swim during mealtimes.
