A Community Paint-A-Thon to Help Restore Community

On September 10, 2022, volunteers across 10 communities of the northwest Chicago suburbs will gather to paint the homes of income-restricted individuals who either have a permanent disability, are veterans, or are 60 years or older and unable to paint their homes themselves.

Through the collaboration of Catholic Charities Northwest Suburban Senior Services, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley, and a number of other generous sponsors, the Paint-A-Thon is seeking volunteers from area businesses, churches, social service and civic groups. All Paint-a-thon volunteers must be at least 14 years old, and organized youth groups must provide one adult volunteer for every five youth volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering to paint, please contact HandsOn Suburban Chicago at (847) 228-1320.

Who qualifies to apply for assistance? Seniors over 60 years of age, veterans or disabled homeowners of single-family residences who are income-restricted and who are physically unable to paint their homes themselves are eligible. The homes must be owner-occupied and in sufficient condition so that scraping and spot priming are the only preparations needed. The home must also fall within the confines of the 10 following townships:
1. Barrington
2. Elk Grove
3. Hanover
4. Maine
5. New Trier
6. Niles
7. Northfield
8. Palatine
9. Schaumburg
10. Wheeling

Additional eligibility requirements include:

  • The house must be a single-family residence, occupied by its owner(s) and in need of paint.
  • Only the exterior of the house may be painted as part of the Paint-a-thon.
  • The house must not be taller than two stories or exceed 25 feet in height.
  • The house must be structurally sound, not in need of major repairs and approved by an inspector.
  • A homeowner or adult family member must be present when a volunteer team is at the home.
  • The homeowner is not intending to sell the house within the next two years.

The application deadline is July 1, 2022, so please reach out and apply today. To apply, download the application at https://www.catholiccharities.net/GetHelp/OurServices/SeniorCaseManagement.aspx#Paint-A-Thon-381 or to have an application mailed, call (847) 253-5500 and ask about the Paint-A-Thon Application.
